Joseph Sheehan Road Race

KCBC Racing had 6 members participate in the Joseph Sheehan Road Race on Sunday 4/29. From Leavenworth to Atchison and back, this race is plagued with poor weather, and this year was no exception. With temperatures in the low 50's, and rain ranging from sprinkles to downpours, the conditions were less than ideal. Even still, the fields were fairly large, and consisted of the usual suspects in the local racing scene.

Bret had a flat 3 miles into his Cat 5 race, but a wheel change got him back rolling again.

A last minute restroom break caused Mark to miss the start, and therefore chase the pack from 5 minutes back, starting behind the Cat 5 group.

Kyle was in contention, but a flat 4 miles from the finish ended his day.

Michael got out to race his first race of the 2012 season, and pulled the Cat 4 peloton for half the race.

Dan, who has a knack of keeping himself out of trouble put himself in contention on the final climb.

Glenn decided not to travel to Arkansas for the Joe Martin Stage race, but came out to Leavenworth and battled with some of the fastest guys in the area.

Cat 5
Bret - 20 out of 41

Cat 4
Kyle - DNF
Mark - 18 out of 30
Michael - 17 out of 30
Dan - 6 out of 30

Masters 50+
Glenn - 4 out of 7, 8th overall Masters 40/50/60+
Bazaar Road Race

Windy and wild! The Bazaar Road Race takes place in the Flint Hills of Kansas, and it is notorious for foul weather, field fires and wind. This year, we were greeted by only one of those characteristics, the wind. The wind was 35+ mph from the SW, and swirling and gusting to 45+mph.

Dan Schaeffer, Bret Burgess and Mark Horn traveled Southwest of Emporia and competed in the Cat 4/5 race. It was a 48 mile out and back race with either a headwind or tailwind. Very fast or very slow, nothing in between.

Dan Schaeffer held onto the lead group and finished 6th.

Bret Burgess with a lead out sprinted past two riders at the line for 27th

Mark Horn fighting leg cramps kept moving and finished 29th.
God's Country Mountain Classic

Mark Horn competed in his first Mountain Bike race at the God's Country race on the Lawrence River Trails in Lawrence, KS. Mark entered the Single Speed Division and did 2 ten mile loops of fast single track. He finished 3rd in this event, beating out 4th place by only 15 seconds. The Lawrence River Trails are a great trail system for all ages and abilities.
Mission Valley Team Time Trial

Bret Burgess, Kyle Guinn, and Tyler Steele teamed up and raced in the Merckx Division at the Team Time Trial in Eskridge, KS. In the Merckx division, a team of 3 must use Road bikes, with no aero equipment. The KCBC Team placed 3rd in the Merckx Division, and set the 5th fastest overall time of all Divisions. There were some very fast teams out there in full aero gear, but the boys worked together and put forth a great effort.

NW Arkansas Spring Classic RR

Below are Glen's comments from his race in Prairie Grove:

Glen finished 28 out of 41

Official Results:
NWASpringClassicResults2012.pdf

Hi all well last week at Eucha Tough RR 40 + I took on a really hard hilly RR with some really fast guys. Well this week I went on down to Prairie Grove Arkansas for the NWA Spring Classic 40+ boy howdy although not as hilly the 20-25mph cross winds came blowing out of the south, and the field was alot tougher then last week. The boys down south are in May/June speed shape. I again went into the race knowing I'm not in top shape yet and again I made the mistake of being in 3 breakaway attempts early on all three doomed but I was feeling great. The wind was tough and as we came to the start finish the first time everybody was trying to set up for the hard corner about 1/4 mile afterwards which brought us into the teeth of a very strong cross/head wind. This is were not racing enough played into me having a choice of kissing pavement or the grass I choose the grass down I went which resulted me chasing and never really getting back on. Depressing to be going 30mph for 10 minutes and loosing ground. I rode the last 23 miles at 24 mph average speed and only caught ten guys who got dropped on the last hill. Well live and learn feel the wind know when to position your self early don't wait like I did and watch out for riders who at their limits because they can't handle their bikes in tight spots. I'm feeling great really little sore on the arm but I'll be ready for my peaks in July August and Sept.

Perry Roubaix

Tough day out at Perry Lake. Dan Schaeffer, Tyler Steele and Mark Horn arrived prepared and ready to race, only to find out that the County had applied a new gravel surface to the 3 mile stretch the previous Friday. What we thought was going to be a fast race on some hard-packed dirt roads, turned out to be a battle of attrition. It was the luck of the draw for every racer. Some had tire/wheel setups that may have given them an advantage, but the rocks on those roads were big enough and fresh enough to take out anyone who dared to ride them.

Dan had 2 flats within 4 miles, and having used his replacement wheels, his day was done early.

Tyler flatted on the 2nd lap through the gravel, and was mis-informed by another wheel vehicle that the Cat 4 wheel vehicle was ahead of him. Tyler caught a ride with that driver, only to find out that the Cat 4 wheels were actually behind him, and he could have gotten a wheel change. Tyler was out.

Mark was in top 5 until a flat on lap 3. After a quick wheel change (lucky that the wheel vehicle was right behind him), he re-passed 3 riders that overtook during the repair. However, the rough roads had caused his front derailleur to loosen and drop, causing chain and chainring rub while only having the small ring. Mark pulled out at the Start/Finish after 3 laps in favor of repairs.

Overall, it was a mix of emotions. Dan was frustrated and disappointed, not being able to get anything going before the flats. Tyler was irritated at being misled, but felt good on the bike. Mark was pleased with his performance, and sad that the course was so unfair.

God's Country Duathlon

The Multisport season opened yesterday with an off-road duathlon on the Lawrence River Trails. Dan Schaeffer laced up his running shoes for a 2 mile run, then tackled his first Mountain Bike style race with a 2 loop, 20 mile total Mountain bike race, and finished with another 2 mile run to complete the God's Country Duathlon.

Dan finished 5th in his age group. The fields were stacked with a lot of very talented Mountain bike riders, that are also surprisingly fast runners. There were even two guys on Mountain Unicycles!

Dan Schaeffer - 5th out of 12 M30-39
2012 Princeton Roundabout Brevet

Hey today was a great day to get out and ride. Sunny, lite winds lead a few of the KCMBC riders to roll a nice 200k Brevet.

 Those I know of:

 Kent

 David

 Mark

Mark will list others when he gets the chance. Mark did tell me everyone was rolling very well this early in the season. Not in those words but that is what he meant!!!

Yep our very own Glenn the sly man sent me a note Friday night he was in Oklahoma getting ready to roll his first race of the year.

What I got from him today was there where lots of opportunity to close gaps but they where hard. The course was hard and field all CAT 1 and CAT 2's in the break away.

Glenn was very happy with his results and there are some really tough teams in the south. He could not cover every attach, blew up and fought back.

 Unofficial results

 Masters 40+

Spring Fling Criterium #3

According to the official results, Dan Schaeffer took 3rd at the Spring Fling on March 10th. Word on the street is that he won the sprint finish, but the way they handle the scoring doesn't show that. Either way, awesome job Dan.
Spring Fling Criterium #1

Saturday, 2.25.12, marked the first racing opportunity on the KCA calendar with Race #1 of the Spring Fling Criterium Series.
This is the 17th year for the Spring Fling Series. It takes place at Clinton Lake State Park in Lawrence. The course is 1.1 miles, and is exposed to the wind coming off the lake. There is not significant climb, and lots of turns.

I'm not sure whether it was the weather, or just everyone being itchy to race this year, but the turnout was good and the fields were large. However, with large field at the first race of the season, comes sketchy riding. I can attest that the tension was high. There was a crash on the last corner of the last lap in the Masters 35+ race. I believe that it only took out 1 rider, but definitely split the field on the stretch to the finish line.

The KCBC Racing Team showed up in force and continued to prove to the local cycling community that we are a force to contend with. We had one racer in the Masters 35+, five racers in the cat 4/5, and two racers in the Juniors 10-18. The baby blue and orange was everywhere, and we looked good.

Masters 35+
Michael Ruder - 24 out of 32

Cat 4/5
Tyler Steele - 7 out of 57
Dan Schaeffer - 8 out of 57
Kyle Guinn - 27 out of 57
Mark Horn - 30 out of 57
Michael Ruder - 39 out of 57

Juniors 10-18
Jackson Horn - 13 out of 18
Morgan Horn - 14 out of 18

There is a bit of confusion over the official results of the race. I can't speak to anyone else's finishing position, but I know that Michael and I crossed the line together, with one other rider, so I don't know why our finishing positions are so different. Results can be found here:
Spring Fling '12 1-Final-Results.pdf

The rest of the pictures can be found here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lanternerouge/sets/72157629091603798/with/6930637007/

ps - I take back everything I said about the new jersey. The orange with baby blue sleeves is extremely visible in the peloton, and that's what we were looking for.
Capital Cup CX results

What a day of racing in Topeka, part of the Sunflower State Games with the Capital Cup CX event. This Venue is special for the Mound of Mercy and what I call "SUCK" Grass. Like quick sand, you do not know it is soft until you ride into it and then it sucks the speed and energy out of you.

I had the privilege to race today so this can really be a race report from my perspective.

We had FUN and WE raced like champions.
